Birdie warm-up sketches [part: 2]

Hello folks, I’ve been sketching away again this week, doing more little bird warm-up sketches.

I wanted to try a few different ways of drawing the birdies and get a feel for the direction I wanted to take when painting/drawing in neat – which I will make a start on this following week (exciting).  As some of you will know, I love little birdies, and I’ve really enjoyed drawing the sketches so far.  I’m a little scared about starting the final drawings – but in a good way!

Bearded tit illustration by Sarah Papworth

This is a Bearded-tit, I drew him at the beginning of the week.  I like his friendly face and little smile.  Although I liked the sketches from the week before, I wanted to try using the fine-liner pens to add more colour and texture through their mark making – and perhaps to be a bit more stylised.

Sparrow illustration by Sarah Papworth

Here’s a little Sparrow, here I’ve used the watercolours but then used the pen on top.  I don’t have much to say about him, I like him, but prefer others more, (sorry Mr Sparrow)!

Blue tit illustration by Sarah Papworth

I knew I would be drawing a Blue-tit in this series, so I thought I’d do a practice run.  I like the brighter colours, using brush pens and fine-liner pens.  There is a subtle layer of watercolour paint underneath, but perhaps too subtle, as you can’t really see it – not in the photo anyway.

Great tit illustration by Sarah Papworth

And this little chap is a Great-tit.  He’s the last one I drew and I like the contrast with the black and the softer and brighter yellow, which has the texture/mark making that I like too.  I think it’s time to start drawing some birdies in best now!

I’ll show you how I get on, and I’ll be posting more frequently on Instagram, and Facebook.  But will try to update on here as often as possible.

I’m aiming to get the final original drawings finished by the 16th October ’15 and in the shop that weekend (17th/18th Oct), but I will give you more specific times nearer the time.

Thanks for reading and see you again soon!  Thanks, Sarah.

Little bird warm-up sketches

Hello again!  I’ve started doing warm up sketches of little British birdies.  Im planning at the moment to do 8 drawings to sell the originals on Folksy before Christmas.  I’m really excited about this as I haven’t sold the originals before.  I just hope they actually sell!

The sketches are to help me decide what sort of style I want to do them all in.  I’ll post a few more once completed, Im doing one a day at the moment and posting on Instagram.  Please let me know which ones you like or aren’t so keen on, plus if you have any favourite little birds you’d like to see.  It all helps with final decision making!

Coal tit illustration by Sarah Papworth

This was my first sketch, a Coal Tit, I used watercolour for the colours, then a bit of acrylic white for the highlights, then fine line pen on top.  I do really like him but am wondering if he’s a bit too traditional for my liking? – maybe I should go more stylised…

Tiny goldcrest illustration by Sarah Papworth

This chap is a Tiny Goldcrest, as you can see from my scribbly notes he is also created in watercolour, fine line pen then white acrylic on top.  I went a bit more scribbly on him, again Im not sure, but I do like his character/facial expression.

Bullfinch illustration Sarah Papworth

This grumpy chap is a Bullfinch, I drew him with brush pens (if you haven’t used brush pens, you must – they are so fun).  Then I added the white acrylic on top for detail.  I actually preferred him without the acrylic, he was a bit more graphic looking and simple – but he needs to cheer up a bit!

Robin sketch illustration by Sarah Papworth

We have a little robin that has been tapping at our window for a 2 days now (which is getting slightly annoying on this, the 3rd day), I think he wants to be included, so here he is ;).  I like the simplicity of him, I used a brush pen for the red breast and a black fine liner for the sketchy drawing.  I like the leaves added, perhaps I’ll use leaves in all of them…hmmm, decisions decisions.

When I’ve created the final drawings, I’ll upload them all at the same time to Folksy and go live with the shop, so it will be a first come first serve basis. I’ll let you know in plenty of time when that will be.

I’m usually a bit slower at updating the blog, so find the most recent updates on Instagram, also on Facebook and hashtag #bpbirdies.  But I promise to let you know when they are uploaded to Folksy 🙂

Charity dogs trust fair

Hello all, here are the pics from the Dog Show back in August which was held in Broadway, in the Cotswolds.  Below is a shot of the stand with some of the new designs/products on.

Here’s a few of the new prints I did on the sketch challenge – Apatosaurus and Octopus!

This is Hank, he had a poorly foot but is still a very handsome chap.

and a few cheery cards.

It was a lovely day and I got to meet lots of cute dogs and eat cake!

Down on the farm. May exhibition 2014

Happy bank holiday weekend!  Being such a busy bee, I haven’t had a chance to add a few snaps of the exhibition at Cock Harbour Gallery.  So here are a few below….

Here’s the display all set to ready to go for the long weekend.

It was such a lovely weekend, the weather was very spring-like, and I met so many people.  The gallery itself is such a nice place to be for a few days as it’s set away from everything and feels very peaceful.  If you were wondering….the gallery got it’s name from the Cockerel fights that used to be held there back in the day and was at the time named ‘Cock Harbour’.

I managed to get lots of new items ready for the exhibition.  Here’s one of the new square tea-towels, printed on large vintage cotton napkins I bought at the Malvern vintage fair.  Printed in burgundy water-based inks with the ‘We make Jam’ design and underneath it is the ‘Hello bees and butterflies’ print, also on the large vintage napkins.

Market flowers tote, this went down very well and I have a queue of orders for these, plus I will be making myself one to take on holiday soon!

All the visitors were interested in my processes of screen printing and designing the products, which was great to be able to talk about.

These woven patterned cushions sold out, I have a bit more of the fabric, bought form another vintage fair to make a few more.  I bought it as thought it went perfectly with my new fox print.

The cushions went down well – I do love a good cushion!

‘Sleepy hollow’ fox print sold on the first day, he’s very happy in his new home.  He comes in dark navy plus a burgundy, on the neutral linen base.

Added to the collection, some more animal prints to add to the gang.  There’s Weasel, Fox, Hedgehog and a few smaller prints like the butterfly below.  I’ll have to take some more pics of the others.

Mini print (A5) Butterfly ‘Follow your dreams’ in lavender.

Hedgehog made his debut and is going to a house in Wales this week.

Mini cushion; Clippity clop horse print on natural hessian with a vintage printed reverse.

Here I am, having a bit of a photo session in front of the display.

And when there was a quiet period I went to say hello to the neighbouring cattle.  All in all, a great weekend.  Thanks to Colin Bomford, the gallery owner, for having Beetroot Press to stay at his lovely gallery!

If you like any of the products you see here, they haven’t quite made it into the Etsy or Folksy shops yet, so just send me a message if you’d like one.  But I will post again when they are all in the Beetroot Press shops to let you know.

Local exhibition

Hello Everyone,  I’ve been very busy in my spare hours designing, printing and sewing for Beetroot Press’ new AW14 pieces.  And most of them will be on show at an exhibition this May bank holiday weekend, at local gallery; Cock Harbour.

Places to visit in Worcestershire_cotswolds_galleries

The gallery is set back down a country lane in South Littleton, near Evesham, held in two lovely old buildings.  Usually view by appointment, owner and dealer Colin Bomford, puts on a show every year to invite people to come and browse and have a glass of fizz in a relaxing atmosphere.

Happy new year 2014

Hello and a slightly belated Happy new year to you all!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a good start to 2014?

Enchanted Christmas 2013 initial select-3

I’ve been sent a couple of photos from our christmas fairs, and pop up shop in Kew Gardens with Want Need Love.  Above is Juls helping out on the stall at Chipping Campden Festive fair, he even got into the Cotswold Journal!  (But I wasn’t quick enough to get a copy).

want need love Kew christmas market 2013

This is the pop-up shop in Kew Gardens at their Christmas market event which ran for a whole month.  Looks gorgeous doesn’t it!  The girls from ‘Want Need Love’ were running it, and had selected some lovely items from various artists.  Beetroot Press had the animal illustrations, lavender pillows and cards there.

I’m currently trying to find the time to work on mood boards to develop some new designs for the range while freelancing and trying to organise my storage and filing.  There’s already a couple of new animal illustrations to add to the range later in the year.  I’ll do my best to add some sneak peek photos for you all.  But for now, I wish you the best year yet, with lots of happy days and peaceful nights.

Chipping Campden Christmas market

christmas markets in cotswolds beetroot press

Hello again, the Upton House Christmas market went well last weekend.  I took a few snaps before the visitors started arriving.  They had Santa’s grotto and carol singers, and their own little shop was full of nice things to buy.

I found this old postcard of Chipping Campden, and have to say it looks pretty much the same still!   The market will be open on Friday 6th at 3pm till 8pm, then again on Saturday 10am until 5pm (we will only be there on the Saturday).

Deer illustration by Beetroot Press

I hope the weather is better on saturday as it’s very blustery out there today, all my prints and cards will blow away!  The Deer print above is a new addition and will be making his debut at the fair on Saturday – (he’s a bit scared so please be nice to him).  Pop along if you are near by and say hello.

Christmas at Upton House

Upton house christmas

Beetroot Press will be at the Upton house Christmas market tomorrow, 30th November, selling lots of giftie goodies!  I’m super excited about this Christmas market as I’m hoping to get a glimpse of the house interior which has been decked out for Christmas in 1930’s period style.

upton house visits

Along with the Christmas market, there will be carols singers, mince pies and mulled wine and Santa’s grotto!

Upton house

The house is known to date back to the reign of Richard 1 when it belonged to the Arden family.  Apparently it’s heyday was in the 1930’s when the owner, Lord and Lady Bearsted held many house parties, and the interior style of the house reflects the 1930’s period in millionaire style!

Can’t wait!  The house is near Banbury, in Oxfordshire, (post code: OX15 6HT), come and say hello.  The fair is on for both Saturday and Sunday, but we will only be there on the Saturday.
